Pan American World Airways was established in 1927. More commonly known as Pan Am, the airline operated domestic and international flights. It ceased ooperations in late 1991 due to financial problems.

Contents of the Collection
The collection consists of correspondence from Edmund Abbott to Aggie and John Diebold in 1984 that includes two black-and-white 7x9" photographs of Pan American's amphibious Clipper aircraft, taken in Florida, 1937. One photograph features a Pan Am Airways Sikorsky S-42 on a runway. The other photograph features a Pan Am Airways Sikorsky S-40 docked with passengers boarding.

James Hamilton Smith (1913-2002) attended the Boeing School of Aeronautics and worked in the field of aviation as a government contractor for the Boeing Company, as well as the Defense Contract Administration Services.
