Denise Babcock Schmidt Pan American Airways Flight Attendant Collection

 Collection — Box: One
Identifier: 2008-10-28
The Denise Babcock Schmidt Pan American Airways Flight Attendant Collection is comprised primarily of textual materials and some photographs documenting Schmidt's time as a Pan Am flight attendant from 1973-1985, with some materials dating in the 2000s.

The collection contains two Pan Am Stewardess School diplomas with color photographic 8x10" class portraits and accompanying certificate holder, 1973 and 1977. In addition, there are twelve color 3x5" photographs which are casual snapshots of Schmidt in her Pan Am uniform, co-workers, and family. None of the images include captions. There is also one color portrait, dated January 1970, of William C. Westmoreland which includes an inscription on the front: "To Irma de Pedro - On behalf of the troops, sincere thanks to you and all the crews for many pleasant R and R [rest and relaxation] flights. - W. C. Westmoreland." The connection between de Pedro and Schmidt is unknown but it is possible they worked together at Pan Am.

There are also pieces of assorted Pan Am ephemera such as decals, postcards, menus, and route maps. Instructional materials, including booklets about the 24-hour clock, Pan Am routes, and "Knapkin Knack," a photocopy of a guide to napkin folding for first class service, are also included. There are two additional booklets about this history of Pan Am, a Jetwings World Wings newsletter (1992), and eleven World Wings International calendars (1997-2008) as well as a Miami Herald clipping from June 30, 2001 about Pan Am returning to the Miami, Florida area and a "Pan Am Vietnam Wings of Freedom: 30th Anniversary of the Last Flight Out" commemorative booklet from a symposium and reunion in Arlington, Virigina on April 22, 2005.
