Historical Note: Pan Am Airways S-40, American Clipper

Based in Dinner Key, Miami, Florida, Pan American Airways began service with amphibious "flying boats" for its South American routes in 1931. Sikorsky developed the S-40 model, a 38 passenger aircraft, in response to Pan Am Airways president Juan Trippe's request for an amphibious aircraft with greater passenger capacity than the 8 passenger S-38. Sikorsky built three S-40 aircraft that then became the first members of the Pan American Airways Clipper family. The Pan Am Airways Sikorsky S-40 featured in one of the photographs appears to have tail number NC-80V, which was the tail number of the S-40 nicknamed the "American Clipper."
