Contents of the Collection

The Edward M. Young Military Aircraft Slides holds approximately 1,642 color slides that depict primarily U.S. and Asian military aircraft and some commercial aircraft. The shots were taken by Edward M. Young from 1974 to 1984 while he was living and working in Asia. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by subject.

The bulk of the slides depict United States and Asian military aircraft, often on stationary display at military air bases or aviation museums in various locales, including at the Indian Air Force Museum, Pima Air and Space Museum, and the Republic of China Armed Forces Museum. A strength of the collection is approximately 310 slides taken at the Royal Thai Air Force Museum between 1979-1981. The slides cover a variety of military aircraft, including the North American F-86F as well as aircraft from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and Thai Airways, among others. Also of note are various United States military aircraft in general, as they appear in multiple folders within the collection, including at Davis-Monthan and Lackland Air Force bases, NAS Whidbey Island, and on both the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk and Midway. Identified military aircraft includes, but is not limited to, the Boeing B-17, Convair F-106A Delta Dart, Douglas R6D-1Z Liftmaster, Lockheed F-4 Lightning, Northrop T-38 Talon, Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, and the Vought A-7 Corsair.

In addition to the images of military aircraft, there is a small amount of images depicting airliners. These planes are typically seen on the tarmac at airports at locations such as Hong Kong and Tokyo. Livery is sometimes visible, although it is often obscured. Identified airlines include Air France, Cathay Pacific Airlines, and Pan American World Airways.

The slides have been kept in their original groupings, as organized by Young. Some folders include more than one topic, which is often noted in the folder title, but not always.
