Lawrence P. Tanguay Aviation Collection
Content Description
The Lawrence P. Tanguay Aviation Collection is a small collection of documents and photographs collected by Paul Alan Roales related to Tanguay's aviation career, and especially his 1942-1943 civilian service during World War II in Eritrea with Douglas Aircraft Company's Project 19.
Textual materials in the collection document realte specifically to Tanguay's participation in Project 19 and document the operations of the program and actions on specific aircraft. Materials include lecture notes about Project 19; memos for the Flight Maintenance Department; blank forms, such as monthly reports on labor, gas and oil consupmtion, and service; service reports on various aircraft; travel orders; and a contract extension for Tanguay. The service reports document the findings and recommendations on Consolidated B-24 Liberators (#41-11593, 41-11614, 41-11616, 42-40414), North American B-25 Mitchells (#42-32508), Douglas C-47 Skytrains (#41-7738, 42-92656), a Lockheed C-60 Lodestar, a Lockheed C-69 Constellation (#42-55855), and Curtiss P-40 Warhawks (#41-14565, 41-24972, 41-36384).
The visual materials in the collection seem related more broadly to Tanguay's career in avaition. There are 24 photographic prints in the collection, though none has captions or identifications to provide context. Nineteen prints appear to depict men training at one of Douglas's Aero Industries Technical Institutes, likely in Los Angeles, California. The men depicted are in uniforms with "Aero ITI" patches and work on various aircraft parts. Some images depict classroom scenes and leisure activities. Additionally, two prints and a clipping portray Tanguay, possibly in awards ceremonies; an additional photograph of a banquet may also include Tanguay. One print depicts a damaged Macchi M.C.200 Saetta and one last print depicts a scene of wartime damage. All photographs are black-and-white, and primarily in 8x10-inch format.
In addition, there is a 1944 Douglas Aircraft Company oversize document with an illustration showing nomenclature for airplane outer surfaces, not specific to any one type of aircraft.
