The MacPherson B. Williams Naval Aviation Collection
Content Description
The MacPherson B. Williams Naval Aviation Collection is a small collection consisting of military records and photographs related to Rear Admiral MacPherson B. Williams' career in the U.S. Navy dating from about 1931-1959.
The military records document both MacPherson's career and the history of Air Group Three. Military orders and other records provide information on MacPherson's activities from 1932-1959. Of particular note are some official memos documenting the sequence of events when he was struck down in December 1944, parachuted out of his plane and landed near Marikina Airfield near Manila, Philippines, and then was rescued by the USS Orca in February 1945. A photocopy of a typed account titled "Philippine Adventure" provides Williams' own personal narrative of these events. Also present are two folders of documents which provide chronologies and histories of Air Group Three, of which Williams was commander starting in 1943.
The 16 photographs in the collection are all black-and-white prints of official U.S. Navy photographs. They depict Naval aviation scenes but are not directly of Williams' personal experiences. The earliest image is from 1932 and depicts biplanes from Scouting Squadron Two from Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California. Three images depict aircraft carriers, including the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. Other images were taken by Light Photographic Squadron 62 (VFP-62), dated 1958-1959, and show: an F9F-8P over the eye of Hurricane Grace; aerial views of NAS Cecil Field and NAS Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida; air-to-air refueling on Vought F8U Crusaders; and formation flying of Grumman F9F Cougars, McDonnell F3H Demons and F2H Banshees, and Vought F8U Crusaders. Most of the images of planes are air-to-air photographs, rather than photographs taken from the ground. Many of the planes are associated with VF-43. Three prints are 8x10 inches but the rest are 11x14 inches and some are mounted on board.

Biographical Note: MacPherson B. Williams
MacPherson "Mac" B. Williams was a pilot for the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
MacPherson Berrien Williams was born June 19, 1906 in Augusta, Georgia to MacPherson Berrien Williams (1872-1914) and Julia Sanders (Carmichael) Williams (1874-1941). He had two sisters. Williams graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1930 and then had a long career in the U.S. Navy.
Over the course of his career, he served on board the Saratoga (CV-3), Enterprise (CV-6), Yorktown (CV-5), Essex (CV-9), and Yorktown (CV-10). He achieved the rank of Rear Admiral by the end of his career. After World War II, he served in the Office of Chief of Naval Operations. In about 1947 he was stationed in the Philippines and by 1949 he was posted to China. In 1949 he became Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Activities at Severn River Naval Command, in Annapolis, Maryland. By 1956 he was assigend to Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, in Washington State, as chief of staff for operational and training flights. Williams retired from military service in 1959.
During his World War II service in the Pacific theater, Williams had a noteworthy bail-out event. He was leading a morning strike on December 16, 1944 near Manila Bay, Philppines. After he and his wing man Jake Jones dropped their bombs, they headed north along the Pasig River and delivered a low-level attack where they suspected were hidden Japanese aicraft, but a small antiaircraft hit his engine. A fire started and soon entered the cockpit, forcing Williams to bail out. He landed in enemy territory, but was rescued by guerrilla fighters. They fed him and helped treat his injuries, and eventually delivered him to the USS Orca.
Williams married Mary W. Miller (1908-2006) on November 29, 1930 in New York, New York. MacPherson B. Williams died November 28, 1990 and is buried in the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.
