Dorothy Allen and Carol Gounaris Flying Tiger Flight Attendant Collection
Contents of the Collection
The collection is comprised of primarily textual materials with a small amount of photographs that are related to Dorothy (Jesseman) Allen and Carol (Prentice) Gounaris who worked for the Flying Tiger Line as flight attendants, 1960-1964. The collection has been sorted into two series.
Series I, Dorothy Allen materials, is the bulk of the collection. It includes Flying Tiger employee documentation in the form of a 1962 flight attendant seniority list, cholera vaccination certificate, and a food handling certification letter; Allen's passport; and assorted ephemera, including Japanese paper currency and conversion table, a hand-drawn map of a section of Tokyo, Japan, and several Japanese-language business cards. There are also three photographs, two in black-and-white and one in color. The sizes vary from 3.5x3.5" to 5x7".
The color photograph is a casual snapshot of fellow flight attendant, Gigi Morelli, and has an inscription to "Dot" on the reverse dated August 28, 1964, "No words can real[ly] express how great you are, but I must say you are my only best friend. For the years to come a rememberance of the early days. May tomorrow bring your dreams to reality. Sincerely, Gigi."
The black-and-white photographs both depict Allen; one in her Flying Tiger uniform next to her mother and the other she stands alone next to a wall. The images have accompanying text, written by Allen, that provide context.
Series II, Carol Gounaris materials, contains a poem by Gounaris on September 22, 1960. It is handwritten on Capitol Airways, Inc. letterhead and at some point has suffered slight water damage. There is a typed copy of the poem with the original. Also included is Gounaris' passport, which includes a small head shot of her, and 1962 flight time and expense record log book, cholera vaccination certificate, and a payroll deduction authorization form.
