Biographical Note
Dorothy (Jesseman) Allen was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on April 12, 1939. She enlisted in the United States Women's Air Force (WAF) on July 22, 1957, one month after she graduated from Commerce High School in Springfield. Allen attended basic trianing at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB), San Antonio, Texas. She as initially assigned to the 27th Air Division, Air Defense Command at Norton AFB, San Bernadino, California as a Aircraft Control and Warning Operator. In 1959 Allen joined the Miltary Air Transport Service (MATS) as a Flight Traffice Specialist at Palm Beach AFB, Florida.
Allen earned her wings with the 76th Air Transport Squadron (MATS) at Charleston AFB, South Carolina. She logged over 1,250 hours and flew in C-121C Super Constellations to destinations in the Azores, Bermuda, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Libya, Newfoundland, Panama, Pakistan, Puerot Rico, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and the Sudan. Allen recieved an Honorable Discharge in 1960 and joined the Flying Tigers as a flight attendant, basedat San Francisco International Airport, California. She served aboard CL-44 Swingtails flying to Alaska, Guam, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Wake Island, and France. She also flew with Slick Airways to the Far East.
Later, Allen pursued a career with Pacific Bell, holding management positions in San Francisco, California. She retired in 1987 with 29 years of service. A life-long volunteer, Allen served with various organizations, including activities as a member of Murrieta, California's Veteran's Memorial Committee. In 2009, Allen was honored in a Tribute to Veterans ceremony. As of 2010, Dorothy (Jesseman) Allen was an active member of Women in Military Service for America and was residing in California.
