Abstract

The Joseph A. Bossi served as a sergeant in the 162nd Aero Squadron during World War I. The collection contains an event program and postcard relating to Bossi's service in Europe.

Biographical Note

Joseph Andrew Bossi was born in Washington state on February 4,1892 to Giuseppe (Joseph) Bossi and Maria Giovanna (Mary) Nigro. He enlisted in the United States Army circa 1915-1917 and was a sergeant in the 162nd Aero Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Service. During his World War I service, he was stationed in England. After the war, he returned to the United States.

Bossi married Valeria Cecilia Kautzky (1906-2003), circa 1940-1941, and the couple had a son, Joseph Jr. Joseph A. Bossi, Sr. died on December 10, 1994.

Historical Note: 162nd Aero Squadron The 162nd Aero Squadron was organized at Kelly Field, Texas in December 1917. Shortly after, they moved to Wilbur Wright Field, Ohio. In February 1918, the squadron was called up for overseas service, stationed briefly at Garden City, New York and departing from the Port of Embarkation at Hoboken, New Jersey. Although the group was trained as a pursuit squadron, it never entered combat. The unit served as Services of Supply troops during and after the war. The 162nd returned home in February 1919 and was demobilized at Garden City.
