The collection documents Borley's 36-year military career as a pilot and fighter ace in the U.S. Navy and consists of textual, visual and audiovisual materials and primarily dates from 1942 to 1968, with some later dates and a small amount of personal materials.

The Howard J. Boydstun Naval Aviation Collection contains both visual materials and textual documents that bring to light the military career of naval aviator Howard J. Boydstun. Boydstun served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While the collection dates from 1940 to 1995, the bulk of the materials document the years of Boydstun’s service from 1942 until his retirement in 1972.
