Clarence Bale United States Navy Collection

 Collection — Folder: 1
Identifier: 1989-11-01

Contents of the Collection

The Clarence Bale United States Navy Collection is quite small and holds several textual items and small objects related to Navy airships and battleships from 1933 to 1944, collected by Clarence Bale.

The collection documents two Navy airships, the USS Macon and the USSAkron. Two February 12, 1935 dispatches from the Macon describe its destructive crash. The USSAkron is documented with three small pieces from the airship. Two pieces are metal; one is a small oval that appears to be an intact piece. The other metal piece is triangular and appears warped or bent. Neither piece has markings or words. The third piece is a rectangular wood fragment with "USSAkron" written in black on it. All three pieces have been covered in tape and are attached to a scrapbook page.

Additionally, the USS Texas battleship is also documented in the collection with an undated Christmas holiday card with an image of Texas on the front, a photographic clipping from the Associated Press which depicts the Texas as it bombed the coast of Northern France during the Normandy landings in 1944, and the June 13, 1936 issue ofTexas Steer, a newsletter for the crew of the Texas. The newsletter includes information about military operations and news as well as social and recreational news.
