The collection consists of an incident report and photographs of a B-17G crew, 490th Bomber Group, 850th Squadron, based in Eye, East Anglia, England with its aircraft that was damaged by enemy fire during a bombing mission on March 9, 1945. The two-page report by B-17 pilot Robert Mason describes that the crew came under flak fire en route to their bombing target: railroad yards in Frankfurt, Germany. The David R. Mathis photographic portrait is comprised of a single 5x7" black-and-white photographic portrait of David R. Mathis in his United States Army Air Forces uniform, dated 1943. There is a handwritten caption on the reverse: "26 yrs David Robert Mathis 1943." The photoograph was found in the foot locker of Anita G. Parker, a servicewoman of the Army Nurse Corps, but the connection between Mathis and Parker is unknown.
