Milton W. Sherman Aviation Cartoon Collection
Contents of the Collection
The Milton W. Sherman Aviation Cartoon Collection contains thirty-nine aviation cartoons and comic strips published in 1935-1936 that depict notable aviators and aircraft of the 1920s-1930s.
Nearly all of the cartoons and comics are from the "Hall of Fame of the Air" series. Written by aviator Eddie Rickenbacker and drawn by aviator and artist Clayton Knight, each strip focuses on a notable aviator and briefly sketches a highlight of their career. Each strip is in color and usually includes four panels, with a fifth panel depicting an aircraft of the era. There are seven single panels that feature aircraft and no aviator. Featured pilots include, but are not limited to, James Doolittle, Amelia Earhart, Frank Hawks, Charles Lindbergh, Clyde Pangborn, and World War I fighter ace George Vaughn, who also has an obituary clipping in the collection. A wide variety of aircraft are depicted, including the Boeing 247D, Fokker D-7, Sikorsky S-43, Sopwith Camel, and Sopwith Triplane, to name just a few.
Also included is a Camels cigarette ad in the comic strip "My Greatest Thrill!" by Frank Hawks. The cartoon relates a harrowing experience during a flight with stormy weather that resolves well and ends with a Camels cigarette.
