Contents of the Collection

The Sanford W. Seidler Aircraft Carrier Collection is comprised of textual and visual materials collected and created by Seidler during his radio technician military service and his work as an electronic systems engineer post-war. Dates range from 1943-1991, although the bulk of the material is dated 1969-1974. The collection has been divided into two series based on format and organized alphabetically within the series due to its small size.

Series I, textual materials, is relatively small. The series holds documents related to Seidler's departure from World War II service as a United States Navy Radio Technician, Third Class, including three booklets "Going back to civilian life," "The Last word on life insurance for men discharged from the Navy," and "Handbook of New York State's services and benefits for veterans and their families." Also present is a referral sheet and correspondence from the "District Civil Readjustment Office." Additional materials relate to Seidler's work as an Electronic Systems Engineer for Norden Systems, including a job description, a photocopy of a sales order and contract between Norden Systems and Naval Surface Weapons Center, and correspondence and reports related to the CASEE (Comprehensive aircraft supporrt effectiveness evaluation) simulation program. A welcome packet for the U.S.S. Enterprise is also present.

The bulk and strength of the collection is Series II, photographs and slides. There are 385 color 35mm slides, taken by Seidler during his time on various aircraft carriers from 1969-1974. The USS Enterprise is the most heavily represented in the collection, but activities on the USS America, Forrestal, and Ranger are also depicted. The slides are grouped by carrier when Seidler was posted there to implement and test the CASEE simulation program. Images depict the carriers, both from the exterior and interior; military service personnel engaged in daily duties like maintenance as well as ceremonies and band performances; military aircraft landing, taking off and stationary on the carrier decks, and coastlines as seen from the carriers. There are also nine black-and-white 5x7-inch photographs. One depicts an aircraft carrier, while the rest depict street scenes, likely in post-World War II Japan. Images include boats in a waterway (possibly a floating market), a traffic officer, civilians and scenic shots of buildings. None of the items include captions or contextual information.

Biographical Note

Sanford W. Seidler (1924-2009) was a United States Navy Radio Technician, Third Class from 1944-1946 and a Electronic Systems Engineer at Norden Systems.

Sanford Warren Seidler was born on December 21, 1924 in New York, New York to Max and Rose (Weiss) Seidler. He served in the Navy from July 1944 to June 1946 as a Radio Technician, Third Class and served abord the U.S.S. Chourre in the Pacific Theater. During his military service, Seidler was awarded the American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Electronic Technician's Mate, Third Class.

Post-war, he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and graduated in 1948. In 1953, he attained a Master's in Electrical Engineering from New York University. From 1948 to 1965, Seidler worked in engineering for United Technologies and other radio and electronic companies. In September 1965, Seidler joined Norden Systems, a national defense contractor as an Electronic Systems Engineer. Seidler wrote the code for Norden's CASEE (Comprehensive Aircraft Support Effectiveness Evaluation) simulation model, a safety program. It was Seidler's job to be posted on aircraft carriers to implement and test the program. He was posted to several aircraft carriers, including the U.S.S. America, Enterprise, Forestal, and Ranger. In October 1989, Seidler joined Kilkeary, Scott & Associates, another contract firm. Presumably he remained with them until his retirement. Post-retirement, Seidler acted as a consultant.

Seidler married Jean Gordon on April 7, 1949 in New York, New York. Seidler was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), president of the Stamford Go club, a member of various bridge clubs, and enjoyed photography, sailing and did volunteer work as voice talent for flight simulator games. Sanford W. Seidler died on December 28, 2009 in Stamford, Connecticut.

Processing Information

The slides arrived in plastic boxes grouped by ship name. The processing archivist removed them from boxes and placed in protective sleeves but retained original numbered order as provided by the creator. Two photographs were sleeved.
