Frank C. Morris Pan Am Collection
Content Description
The Frank C. Morris Pan Am Collection is a small collection consisting of visual materials that Morris acquired during his work as a political reporter for the Detroit Free Press in the 1950s.
Morris traveled with and reported on the Dwight D. Eisenhower presidential campaign in 1952 and this is documented in the collection with a route map notating Eisenhower's air and rail travel. The original mailing tube for the map addressed to Morris with a United Airlines first class mail label from January 1953 is also present. The collection also includes bound volume of photographs titled "Inaugural Midwest to Europe Press Flight, Pan American World Airways" and dated April 20, 1954 that documents the travels of reporters and photographers going to Scotland, Germany, and possibly other European locations. It is unclear if this press flight was related to Eisenhower's travels. The journalists traveled aboard a Pan Am Clipper Douglas DC-6B, tail number N6520C. The 55 images in the volume depict the journalists inside the aircraft cabin, boarding and exiting the plane at various locations, and gathering at assorted sites. All images are black-and-white and are approximately 18 cm square. There are no identifications or captions for the images. Finally, the collection includes a certificate for Morris as a member of the Pan Am Clipper Club dated June 4, 1954.
