Julianne Kumasaka International Taketombo Association Scrapbook
Content Description
The Julianne Kumasaka International Taketombo Association Scrapbook is a small collection consisting of one scrapbook created and compiled by Association organizer Julianne Kumasaka with visual and textual materials documenting the activities International Taketombo Association based in in Seattle, Washington in the early 1990s. An exhibit of taketombos and related events at the Museum of Flight are especially well documented by the materials.
The scrapbook was a 3-ring "magnetic" style photo album with 33 pages containing primarily photographs but also printed ephemera. There are a total of 101 photographic prints, primarily color snpashots taken by Association members, but also a few black-and-white portraits gathered from other sources. The images depict taketombos made by Association members; exhibit displays and events such as flying demonstrations at the Museum of Flight including Association members, Museum staff, and visitors; gatherings of local members and visiting members from Japan at homes of Association members, the Space Needle, and Seattle area restaurants; and a trip by Association members to Japan, also involving Museum Executive Director Howard Lovering. In addition to Lovering, other individuals identified in the photos include taketombo designer Yoshio Akioka, Association organizer Julianne Kumasaka, taketombo artisan Mr. Suzuki, and University of Washington professor George Tsutakawa.
The printed ephemera includes documents created by the Association in conjunction with the Museum of Flight such as handouts about teketombos, instructions on how to build taketombos, event invitations and flyers, calendar listings and clippings from the Museum's newsletters, as well as some correspondence and clippings from other local publications. Most documents are in English but a few are in Japanese.
