Historical Note: International Taketombo Association

The International Taketombo Association (ITA) was an association that existed in the 1980s and 1990s in Japan and Seattle, Washington to promote the knowledge and tradition of taketombo, a Japanese whirligig toy.

The Seattle Chapter of the International Taketombo Association started in 1989 after Seattle resident Julianne Kumasaka traveled to Japan and made contact with some taketombo makers and enthusiasts there. Upon retuning home, she formed the Seattle chapter of the Association. ITA Seattle chapter members gathered monthly and hosted events, including some at the Museum of Flight with temporary exhibits. Association member and taketombo maker Yoshio Akioka made donation of about 100 taketombo to the Museum in 1991. An exhibit of the taketombo opened at the Museum in 1992. The Seattle chapter hosted a delegation ITA members from Japan 1992.

It is likely the Japan and Seattle-based chapters were the only active chapters. It is unknown how long the Association was active.
