Content Description

The Don Brown Early Pacific Northwest Aviation Photograph Collection is a small collection of visual materials collected by Brown that feature various aviation personalities and aviation scenes in the Pacific Northwest region during the early 20th century. The main individuals represented are Vern C. Gorst, as well as two female aviators, Florence Seidell and Ruth Wightman. Aviation scenes includes images of crowds watching planes in flight, planes in flight over water, planes parked in fields, and various pilots and people posing with aircraft. In addition there is an image of what appears to be the first commercial airmail flight out of Pasco, Washington in 1926. A variety of early aircraft designs are pictured. Some of the images feature aerial views of the Coos River and the Coquille River Valley, both in Oregon.

The collection dates from the 1910s to the 1920s and is comprised of 55 black-and-white photographic prints, 30 negatives, and 9 glass plate negatives, including one hand-tinted glass plate. Many of the photographs are copies from other collections, including the Oregon Historical Society and the Oregonian.
