Content Description

The Ernst H. Linnemann U.S. Air Force Collection is a small collection of textual and visual materials related to Linneman's service in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1950s and early 1960s, working in communications and navigation, especially with TACAN (tactical air navigation) systems.

The collection includes materials collected while Linnemann was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, Scott Air Force Base, Niagara Falls Air Base, and Ladd Air Force Base including a photo collage of Squadron 3711 Flight 1292; portraits of Linnemann in uniform; assorted photos of other crew members; a scrapbook from Scott AFB; a map of Niagara Falls municipal airport; a certificate for having crossed the Arctic Circle in Alaska; a map of Alaska with TACAN sites noted; and assorted articles and clippings. Notably, there are 260 color photographic slides which Linnemann took during his service and later used in a slide-show presentation about his work. These are accompanied by notes identifying the slides and a digital video showing the slide presentation with Linnemann providing narration. Note that besides the slides, the photographs in the collection are all black-and-white and while some of the photographic prints in the collection of Linnemann and crewmates are original vintage prints, a few are digital reprints.

In addition, there are two other folders of materials unrelated to Linnemann's work with the Air Force: 21 color photographs of the B-17G "Lukcy Lady" on view at Cape May Naval Air Station in 2012, and some navigation materials used by United Airlines pilot Ed A. Sarkisian during some flights in 2018.
