Contents of the Collection

The C. Ashby Shoop Aviation Collection is a small collection containing visual and textual materials related to various aircraft, circa 1929-1970s.

Nine photographs in the collection depict primarily aircraft, including the Northrop YB-49, Boeing B-17, Boeing/Northop B-2, Cessna CG-2, and Cessna CW-6. Other images depict General Dynamics AGM-109 and one photograph features a pilot, possibly Shoop, exiting an obscured aircraft. The photographs are 8x10" and are a mix of color and black-and-white prints.

Other materials include clippings about Beechcraft, booklets and a clipping about the B-2, and assorted photocopies and lithographs of various aircraft.

Biographical note: C. Ashby Shoop

C. Ashby Shoop is a Marine Corps veteran who also had a career in the aviation industry.

Charles Ashby Shoop Jr., known as Ashby, was born on November 17, 1947 in Indepdenence, Missouri to Charles Ashby Shoop Sr. and Margaret Blanche (Etzenouser) Shoop. His father was a World War II liaison pilot assigned to the 104th Infantry Division in Europe. Ashby Shoop gew up in Independence and then studied at the University of Kansas, earning a bachelor's of Science in 1970; at the University of West Florida, earning a Master's of Science in 1978; and finally at the University of Puget Sound, earning a JD in 1990. After graduating from college he entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving with them from 1971-1978. He was variously stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia; Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida; Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina; and at Marine Corps Air Station in Futenma, in Okinawa, Japan. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. While in the military, Shoop was a fixed-wing aviator, flying North American OV-10A Broncos operationally in Marine Observation Squadron 1 and 6 (VMO-1 and VMO-6). He trained in jets, North American T-2C Buckeyes and Grumman TF-9J Cougars, being the last Marine to train on the Cougar. He carrier-qualified both on the USS Lexington (CV-16). Shoop spent two years in Asia with flights to Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the Philippines.

After his military service, Shoop worked in the aviation industry variously as an engineer or engineering manager. He worked at the Boeing Company from 1978-1982, at Northrop from 1982-1986, back at Boeing from 1986-2009 (with two years off), at Lockeed in 2016-2018, and at Raytheon in 2018-2021. He returned to Boeing in 2021. While at Boeing, he worked on the B-52, X-32, F-22, P-8, F-15 and Space Station. While employed by Northrop he wokred on the B-2 but was located at Boeing in Seattle, Washington. While at Lockheed he worked on a DARPA hypersonic missile. His work at Raytheon was on a business jet ISR platform.

Additionally, Shoop has been involved with the OV-10 Bronco Association which operates the Fort Worth Aviation Museum in Texas as well as with the Marine Corps Aviation Association. As of 2024 Schoop was still working at the Boeing Company.
