Series V. Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, 1910-1933
Scope and Contents
Series V. Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company is comprised of material dating from 1910 to 1933 and is divided into three subseries: Administrative records, Legal records, and Financial records.
The Administrative records subseries includes a bound volume of board meeting minutes which includes related documents such as correspondence and legal files. A few loose pieces of correspondence and assorted documents are also in the subseries.
The most substantial subseries is the Legal records subseries which is further divided into five sub-subseries by format arranged alphabetically: agreements and contracts, certificates of incorporation and dissolution, deeds and property documents, legal cases, and patent documents. The agreements and contracts sub-subseries provides insight on some of the business dealings of the company. Certificates of Incorporation includes copies of certificates for Curtiss Exhibition Company, Curtiss Motor Company, and Curtiss Engineering Corporation. The files on property consist of indentures (deeds) transferring personal property to the company, correspondence, and papers related to sale of property. These three subseries are all arranged chronologically.
The sub-subseries on legal cases, also arranged chronologically, includes two files related to the U.S. v. Curtiss Aeroplane company, a case regarding the World War I-era contract with the Russian government for the sale of Model K flying boats. These files include correspondence, summaries of order, balance sheets, and typescripts of statements by witnesses (some signed). The file on a case against Handley Page consists of legal documents regarding patent infringement suits. These documents include four photographic images. The file on the Curtiss-Herring suit relates to financial disagreements between Augustus Herring and Glenn Curtiss. Finally, the files on the Curtiss Assets Corporation v. Ford Motor Company consist of a signed stipulation which includes numerous reproductions of technical drawings and two photographs related to Ford 4-AT and 5-AT aircraft.
The sub-subseries on patents is the most substantial grouping within the Legal Records, and has more information on aircraft design than any other part of the collection. This sub-subseries is further subdivided based on the original organization of files: individual patents, patent assignments, Curtiss Aero Car patents, and other documents. The patents in this series are primarily ones for inventions by Glenn Curtiss but also included are patents by others at the Curtiss Company, such as Henry Kleckler and Paul G. Zimmerman. However there are also patents present from inventors outside the company, such as Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright brothers. The documentation files on the patents include photostatic copies of legal paperwork and related correspondence. The individual patent files include copies of the patents, some of which include handwritten notations. The files on patent assignments consist of legal documents transferring rights from individual inventors to the Curtiss Company. The file titled “Aero Car Patents” includes documentation for patents, including Canadian ones, on various improvements for automobiles. Other photographs are also present.
The Financial records subseries primarily consists of four folders of material relating to income taxes, taken out of a 3-ring binder compiled by George S. Lapp, a secretary at the company. One additional file includes some bills of sale for aircraft transferred to the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service.
