Scope and Contents From the Record Group: The Early Aviation Photograph Collection is a collection of unknown origins consisting of 328 black-and-white photographic prints and 299 negatives primarily depicting aircraft from the first half of the 20th century. Abstract

Julius A. Barr (1905-1939) was born in Normal, Illinois and spent time as a personal pilot to Chinese military figures Zhang Xueliang (also known as the "Young Marshal" and "Peter Chang") and General Chiang Kai-shek in the mid-1930s. The collection contains a photograph album with three hundred and thirty-nine (339) black-and-white photographs, most likely taken by Barr, covering his time in China.

Content Description

The collection is comprised of four photographs of Northwest Airways aircraft, dated August 1933. Aircraft include a Ford Tri-motor 5AT (NC8410), Travel Air 6000 (NC8754), Stearman C3 (NC6255), and Sikorsky S-38 (NC303N). Photographs were taken at the Northwest Airways Overhaul Base at Saint Paul, Minnesota.
