Biographical Note

Joseph "Joe" W. Kittingher (1928-2022) served in the United States Air Force as a Command Pilot and Colonel. He participated in Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior while in the service.

He had many aviation accomplishments, including the world record for the highest skydive from 1960 until 2012, the first man to witness the curvature of the Earth, and the first person to complete a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas-powered balloon.
