Biographical Note

Ludwig Franz Stigler (August 21, 1915 – March 22, 2008) was a German fighter pilot and ace in World War II. Stigler is known for sparing an enemy crew in the damaged Boeing B-17 bomber "Ye Olde Pub" in December 1943. He escorted the plane to safety over enemy lines. His actions were kept secret for a long time, but in 1990 he and pilot Charles "Charlie" Brown were reunited and became close friends until their deaths in 2008. Stigler died in Canada, where he moved after the war.
