Early Aviation Photograph Album
Contents of the Collection
The Early Aviation Photograph Album is comprised of a single album with 82 black-and-white photographs that depict aircraft and pilots. Most are dated between 1922-1927, although some are undated. It is not known who compiled the album. The album is black with "Photographs" printed on the cover. The binding is fairly loose and wear is visible on the album.
Within the album, the photographs mostly depict aircraft, including biplanes, floatplanes, and seaplanes. Identified aircraft include the Buhl Airster CA-3, the Curtiss Hawk P1-B, and the Rohrbach Ro V Rocco, among others. Additionally, a few prints show aircraft cabins and passengers. One print shows a Goodyear blimp in flight over an unidentified at-sea battleship. Airlines and pilots are also depicted, including shots of several Fokker F.VII aircraft in KLM livery and several KLM pilots. The KLM pilots are shown next to aircraft and most have signed their corresponding prints, although the names are hard to read. A small number of aircraft for Lufthansa and one for Pan American Airlines is also included. A few pictures feature Charles Lindbergh as well as his Ryan NYP "Spirit of St. Louis."
The photographs are mostly 4x6-inches and are affixed to the black paper album pages with photo corners. While most are in place, some have come loose and many pages are empty. There are no captions on the pages to provide contextual information, although some prints have brief identifying information on the front.
