Kazuo Nomi Airport Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 2003-04-10

Contents of the Collection

The Kazuo Nomi Airport collection is primarily comprised of technical drawings for design, construction, and expansion of various airports, 1972-2002 (bulk dates 1972-1985). The materials were collected and used by Nomi, who was Assistant to the Administrative General Manager, Transportation Services for Japan Air Lines. The materials have been grouped by airport and are listed alphabetically by their anglicized name. Materials within each airport series are ordered chronologically.

The bulk and strength of the collection are technical drawings and plans for various construction projects, expansions, changes, and layouts to terminals, boarding areas, and baggage handling facilities, among other areas. Examples include "terminal building floor plan, level 1" and "typical gate lounge plan." A few design plans focus on airport terminals for assigned airlines, including American Airlines, Braniff Airways, and Mexicana. Other types of material present include airport fact sheets, promotional booklets, reports, a photographic reproduction of a concept design, procedure documents, terminal maps and design planning documents.

Also present is a small amount of ephemera, including two postcards for a Swedish restaurant and a graphic design booklet issued by Lufthansa.

Addtional materials were separated out and placed in Trade Literature, the Commercial Airlines Collection, and the Library. Please inquire for details.

Processing Information

The collection arrived with many folded drawings. They have been unfolded, flattened, interleaved with unbuffered tissue paper, and housed in acid-free enclosures. Some items were too large to unfold fully. They have been unfolded as much as possible and placed in acid-free folders within the flat files. A photographic reproduction was placed into a protective sleeve. Folder titles were devised using the drawing title panels and are in quotations. If no title or label was present, the processing archivist devised a title.
