Edwin Fogelman Early Aviation Scrapbook
Contents of the Collection
The Edwin Fogelman Early Aviation Scrapbook is a small collection composed primarily of 45 black-and-white vintage prints and photographic postcards as well as a small amount of textual items related to early aviators and aircraft, 1925-1929. The scrapbook was likely compiled by Edwin Fogelman, but it is unknown if he had any direct tie-ins with aviation beyond interest.
The bulk of the collection and materials of most interest are the 45 photographs. The photographs depict early aviators and aircraft in a variety of settings, including parked on tarmac, in flight, and on water. Two prints depict aircraft cabins and one print depicts an airship in flight above an at-sea battelship. Identified individuals include aviator Charles A. Lindbergh, World War I pilot Eddie Rickenbacker, Italian ace Silvio Scaroni, and World War I ace William Thaw. Identified aircraft include, but are not limited to, Blackburn Iris, Dornier Do L Dolphin, and Rohrbach Ro V Rocco flying boat. Some prints include stamps, signatures, inscriptions, or captions that provide contextual information, such as names, date, aircraft manufacturer, or location. Sizes range from 3x3-inch to 8x10-inch.
A small amount of textual materials are mixed in amongst the photographs. There are a few letters written to Fogelman by prominent individuals and agencies in response to Fogelman's request for prints and signatures for his collection. A few are in languages other than English, including French, German, and Spanish. Additional items include a September 16, 1927 Oregon Journal clipping titled "Lindbergh visit spurs air mail use in Portland" and an undated clipping about Major Charles Kingsford-Smith. There are also three calling cards; one for Silvio Scaroni, one for aviator Frank P. Lahm, and one for Commandant Armand Pinsard.
