Gary M. Jacobson Jack Waddell Boeing Collection
Contents of the Collection
The Gary M. Jacobson Jack Waddell Boeing Collection is a relatively small collection that pertains to the career of test pilot Jack Waddell. The collection contains primarily logbooks with a small amount of visual materials dated from 1942-1986.
The bulk and strength of the collection are Waddell's logbooks which cover his flying career from 1942 through 1986, although there is a gap from 1961 to 1982. The logbooks begin with his flight training and military service as a Naval Aviator during World War II. Post-war, the logs record his time with North American Aviation, circa 1947-1957. One logbook, dated from 1959-1961, provides insight into Waddell's test pilot career with the Boeing Company, including flights with the Boeing Model 707, Boeing Model 720, Boeing Model 367-80. Notably absent is the logbook which would include information on the first flight of the prototype Boeing Model 747 "City of Everett" which Waddell was the pilot of on February 9, 1969.
Although Waddell's logbook documenting the 747's first flight is not present, his work on the 747 program is represented with other materials. There is a black-and-white publicity photograph of Waddell in the cockpit of the 747, circa 1969. The photograph is 8x10-inches and includes a brief biographical sketch about Waddell issued by the Boeing Company. The collection also includes a number of transparencies that were part of a presentation on the Boeing 747. The presentation covers topics such as "747 Fleet Statistics," "Climb to Cruise Altitude," and "Flight Management Tools."
