Content Description
The Anonymous Manuscripts on World War I Aircraft is a small collection consisting of two typed manuscripts titled "Allied World War I Aircraft Photographs and Text" and "German and Austrian World War I Aircraft Photographs and Text." Both bound volumes consist of typewritten descriptions and histories of World War I-era aircraft by an unidentified author with photographs tipped in. Both volumes are undated but likely date to the 1940s.
The first volume, "Allied World War I Aircraft Photographs and Text," consists of 120 pages of typed text and additional pages with a total of 411 photographs affixed. Topics covered in this volume include development of aircraft in World War I; aircraft ammunition; Ansaldo S.V.A. 4 and 5; Avro 504; Breguet 14; De Havilland 1, 4, and 5; Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b; Handley Page O/400; Hispano-Suiza engines; history of U.S. Aero Squadron insignia; Nieuport 11, 17, 28; O.E.C. (Ordnance Engineering Company or Orenco); Royal Aircraft Factory R.E. 8; Salmson 2 A2; Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5; Sopwith Pup, Strutter, Triplane, Camel, Dolphin, and Snipe; Spad S-7, S-12, S-13, S-11 and S-16; Thomas-Morse MB-3, S-4C.
The second volume, "German and Austrian World War I Aircraft Photographs and Text," consists of 74 pages of typed text, additonal pages with a total of 177 photographs, as well as 23 pages of text with technical diagrams in blue-line process copies. Topics covered in this volume include Albatros D.1, D.III, D.V, C.V; Dornier Rs I, Rs II, Rs III, Rs IV, flying boats; Fokker E.1, Dr.I Triplane, D.VII, Friedrichshafen bomber; Hannover CL-1, CL-2, CL-3; Mercedes engines; Pfalz D.III, D.XII; Roland C.II; Rumpler D.1; Siemens-Schuckert D.III and D.IV Pursuit.
All photographs are black-and-white and are primarily about 2.75 x 4.5 inches. The bulk of the images depict aircraft parked in a field in side or 3/4-quarters view with few people visible. However some images in the second volume include images of planes in flight and combat and there are also a few portraits of Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen at the end.
