Greer World War II Nose Art Photograph Collection
Contents of the Collection
The Greer World War II Nose Art Photograph Collection is a single-file collection that holds 31 black-and-white vintage photographs of World War II aircraft nose art. The aircraft are primarily depicted in the Pacific Theater and include the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, and the Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Twenty-six prints depict nose art of women in pin-up style, including illustrations on planes named "Baby," "Maid in the USA," and "Queen Mae." Six prints feature animals as well as Disney character Daffy Duck on "Idle Curiousity" and "Long Island Duck III." There are also five prints that do not include nose art. The prints show servicemen next to unidentified aircraft, in field operations, and in meal line-up. One print depicts several Royal Australian Air Force engineers unloading tractors and bulldozers from a landing ship at Morotai Island in 1944. Print sizes vary from 2.5x2.5-inches to 4x6-inches. Very few prints include captions to provide contextual information.
