Content Description

The Glenn F. "Red" and Pauline P. (Ballard) Hiersche Collection is a small collection of materials related to the military service of both Glenn F. "Red" and Pauline P. (Ballard) Hiersche, as well as Pauline Hiersche’s 25-year career with the Boeing Company. The collection consists of both visual and textual materials that date from 1937 to 2002.

Glenn F. "Red" Hiersche was a Sergant in the 11th Army Air Corps during World War II. The materials connected to his service are clippings, booklets produced by the Army, certifications, correspondence, rationing stamp, and a hand-drawn illustration by G. Hiersche with an accompanying poem. In addition, there are photographs of G. Hiersche in uniform, candid snapshots, and portraits of his fellow service members. Many of the images depict the men posed together in front of military aircraft. There are also photographs of G. Hiersche in uniform and P. Hiersche on their wedding day.

Pauline P. (Ballard) Hiersche served in the Women's Army Corps Medic Group based in Portland, Oregon from 1945 to 1946. There is an image of her WAC Medic class seated together, Air Force Base pass, and her journal “My Life in the Service” where she detailed her experiences in the Army. Part of the collection also consists of a large number of letters collected by P. Hiersche that G. Hiersche sent to her while they were apart during the war.

In addition to materials related to P. Hiersche’s service during the war, the collection also documents her career in the Boeing Company’s Support Services and Reproduction department from 1960 to 1986. The materials consist of copies of her application to the company, certificates of appreciation, letters thanking her for her work on specific projects from various departments throughout Boeing, cards from her coworkers, Boeing ephemera, as well as an unofficial announcement of her retirement.
