Contents of the Collection
The John P. Oberto Pilot Collection is a small collection that holds textual and visual materials primarily related to Oberto's World War II service as a naval aviator.
The collection includes three logbooks, 1942-1954, and multiple service certificates, including Naval Aviator, VRF-1 Squadron, Satisfactory Service, and his 1961 Honorable Discharge. Also included are notes and twelve modern digital prints and reprints of Oberto as he visited aircraft he had flown during his career that are now stored at various museums. Identified aircraft include a General Motors FM-2 Wildcat, a Grumman F7F-3 Tigercat, and a Stearman N2S Kaydet. The prints also include Oberto, either next to or inside the aircraft. Other images depict a 1944 aircraft delivery flight undertaken by Oberto and Seattle cadets on their way to naval training. There is also a 1954 group portrait of VF-894 at Naval Air Station Sand Point. On the reverse, it includes identification for many of the men, including Oberto. The prints, which vary in size from 3x5" to 11x17", are in both black-and-white and color. Most include contextual information, such as date, location, and aircraft name.
