Walter B. Soroe World War II Collection
Contents of the Collection
The Walter B. Soroe World War II Collection contains materials primarily related to Soroe's World War II service as a Boeing B-17 co-pilot with the 388th Bomb Group, 562nd Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force from 1943-1945. There is also a small amount of materials related to his Korean War service, 1951-1953.
The collection is mostly comprised of textual materials, the bulk of which are 1943-1945 military documents, including special and general orders, medical evaluations and reports, mission list, leave slips, flight records, and discharge papers, among other documents. Also present are Soroe's will, pilot training logbooks and several identification and membership cards. Four black-and-white photographs are included. Two prints depict Soroe in military flight gear, circa 1943-1945. The remaining two images depict an aircraft, likely a B-17, in flight and an unidentified man and young boy standing in a yard. The prints are 2 x 3 inches.
To a lesser extent the collection has military documents related to Soroe's 1951-1953 service during the Korean War, including medical evaluations and will, flight grade sheets, training materials and certificates, and flight records. There are a few additional military-related items including Reserve Officers Association correspondence and member card as well as Veteran's Administration documents, such as receipts and correspondence. The collection also has a digitally printed scrapbook that includes detailed information on his military service with the 388th Bomb Group and their missions and aircraft. It was compiled for Soroe's nephew by a friend who was familiar with the bomb group's history. Also present is a DVD of an event that took place in Knettishall, England, "388th Bomb Group Memorial Dedication, July 14, 2012."
Two personal items are also present; a 1942 mileage ration card and Soroe's 1947 marriage certificate.
