Contents of the Collection

The Blueprints and Technical Drawings Collection is an artificial collection comprised of drawings and diagrams related to assorted aircraft (commercial, personal, and military), including helicopters, rockets, as well as related accessories such as machine guns, engines, other aircraft parts, and some buildings. Materials range from 1878-2000s. These materials document a wide variety of aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing, Curtiss, Douglas, McDonell Douglas Company, Santos-Dumont, and Wright Co.

This collection has heavy representation of Boeing aircraft, including a large number of drawings related to the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Family and the Boeing B-47 Stratojet. Of particular note is a set of drawings of the Boeing Sea Plane Station. In addition to these, reproduction drawings of the Wright Brothers 1903 Kitty Hawk Aeroplane is also noteworthy. The collection also includes drawings for model airplanes inspired by aircraft from Alexander Aircraft Corp, Douglas, Fokker, and Travel Air Manufacturing Co. among others.

Formats include pencil or pen on paper, whiteline or blueline prints, diazo prints, large format photocopies, and other reprographic prints. Drawings and diagram styles include general arrangements, three-views, cutaways, assembly drawings, section details, and building elevations, among other types of technical drawings.

This collection is expected to grow.

Processing Information

Processing work done prior to 2024 by archives staff included adding some materials to acid-free folders. In 2024, the archives staff began a review to bring the collection up to current best practices and to bring various artificial collections together. Excessive duplicates were removed. Materials were placed in acid-free folders, separated by archival tissue paper as needed, and arranged in order by series. Processing work is ongoing.
