Contents of the Collection

The Robert McAbee World War II Photographic Portrait contains a single 11x14 inch black-and-white photographic portrait of United States Naval aviator Robert McAbee, circa 1942-1945. McAbee is depicted wearing his flight jacket and helmet, both of which are part of the Museum of Flight Objects collection. A faded inscription on the front reads "To the sweetest mother in the world - Son." On the verso of the print is a short caption: "Uncle Robert / Gramma Louise's brother / WWII / Took photo after the bombing."

Biographical Note: Robert McAbee

Robert Clark McAbee (1916-1945) was a United States Navy aviator during World War II.

McAbee was born in Granite Falls, Washington, graduated from Port Angeles High School and Central Washington College and attended Washington State College before his family moved to Seattle in 1942. He joined the Naval Air Reserve October 9, 1941, received his wings and served as an instructor at Corpus Christi, Texas before going overseas in May 1945. He was a Grumman Hellcat pilot with Fighter Squadron 94, based off the U.S.S. Lexington. During his military service he attained Lieutenant rank and the Air Medal with a gold star for reconnaissance flights over Japan. He died by drowning on October 4, 1945 when his plane crashed west of Saipan while on his way home.

The photograph was deframed and placed in a protective Mylar sleeve within an acid-free folder.
