Rolfe W. Eckmann Naval Aviation Collection

 Collection — Box: one
Identifier: 2021-09-17
The Rolfe W. Eckmann Naval Aviation Collection consists of textual and visual materials that document Eckmann's service with the U.S. Navy and Naval Station Puget Sound in Washington, commonly known as Sand Point, with materials ranging from the 1940s through 2010s.

Eckmann's career as a U.S. Naval transport pilot is represented with four logbooks dating from 1942-1967. A few documents originally enclosed in the logs include a memo designating Eckmann as a Transport Plane Commander, a flight surgeon's certificate, an airman's certificate and an airman's rating record, and two cards showing completion of standard instrument rating tests. A program from his funeral in 2018 includes a detailed biographical obituary.

Several items in the collection relate to Naval Station Puget Sound, also referred to as Naval Air Station Seattle and Sand Point. These items include a Seattle Times Sunday Pictorial clipping from March 19, 1961 with images of Sand Point; assorted event programs from 1968-1995, including annual military personnel inspections, the 32nd annual naval aviation rendezvous, and the disestablishemnt ceremony; a "Sand Point Remembered" booklet prepared by Eckmann in 1997; and a "Naval Air Station, Seattle: A History" booklet, undated (circa 2010s), also prepared by Eckmann.

Also present in the collection are 19 8x10" black-and-white photographic prints depicting the Japanese surrender at the end of Wolrd War II aboard the USS Missouri in 1945. The prints are official military photographs and do not seem to have direct relation to Eckmann's career or Sand Point.
