World War II Pacific Theater Photographs

 Collection
Identifier: 2018-00-00-48

Contents of the Collection

The World War II Pacific Theater Photographs contains 227 black-and-white prints and 18 negatives taken by United States Army and Navy photographers documenting U.S. military activities in the Pacific Theater in 1945. The images seem to be military publicity shots and the majority of the photographs appear to have been taken in the Marianas Islands.

Due to the relatively small size of the collection, materials were grouped by subject and sorted alphabetically. The bulk of the collection is the depiction of ground troops during active military operations, including tanks and infantry in movement, behind guns, and on the battlefield. Service personnel are also shown in camp, base, or recreational settings, and one image shows four nurses washing their faces using their helmet as a sink. Ten prints feature aircraft, most of which are obscured, and there are 18 aerial survey shots. A number of prints show burial services for American journalist Ernie Pyle and General Simon Bolivar Buckner as well as a Memorial Day service. Buildings, including several bombed edificies; scenic shots of local flora and fauna; and non-military personnel are also depicted, including a stage performance, likely by local people. Many of the prints include original captions as issued by the military. There are also three loose captions that could not be matched to a corresponding print. The bulk of the prints are 8x10 inches, although some are smaller. Some negatives include a corresponding print, while others do not. A note is made on each negative sleeve to indicate if a print is present or not.

Note that some captions include derogatory and offensive language and many images contain graphic scenes of wartime violence including dead bodies.
