Contents of the Collection

The Francis M. Young Aerial Survey Photograph Collection is comprised of fifteen (15) black-and-white aerial photographs taken during Alaska Survey Expeditions, circa 1930s-1940s. The photographs are 18x22" and only a few have very brief contextual information on the reverse. Identifications include a Douglas R5D (Douglas C-54 Skymaster), Mount Rainier (Washington State), and the Columbia Glacier (Alaska).

One (1) photograph depicts an at-sea aircraft carrier with a full deck of aircraft. Six (6) images depict various landscapes and include no aircraft in the image. Eight (8) images depict aircraft, both in flight and on the ground. It is unknown who took the photographs but it is possible some of them were taken by the United States Air Force.
