The Howard Wellman Collection pertains to the military and commercial airline pilot career of Howard Eugene "Brick" Wellman. The collection contains materials gathered and collected by Wellman over his nearly 40-year aviation career, twenty-nine years of which were completed overseas serving as a pilot for Iran Air and Pacific Overseas Airlines. The collection includes photographs, certificates, correspondence, personnel records, an illustration of Wellman, airline ephemera and textual material.

Biographical Note: Howard Wellman

Howard Eugene "Brick" Wellman was born March 6, 1914 in eastern Washington (State). Wellman began flying in 1937 and was an instructor for the Civil Pilot's Training program in 1939. In fall 1940, he was hired by Buroker-Hicks Flying Service as Chief Instructor.

In the spring of 1944, Wellman was hired by Consolidated Vultee and after 10 months transferred to Consairway Division, which flew personnel and supplies to the Pacific Islands during World War II.

After the war, Wellman worked for United Airlines very briefly. Wellman joined Pacific Airline Siam (POAS) in late 1950 and remained in Thailand for eight years. He joined Iran Air in 1959 and flew for them for sixteen years, including becoming part of the VIP flight crew and serving as pilot for the Shah of Iran. Wellman retired from flying in 1974 and was accepted to the International Aviation Organization, United Nations. He was posted in Lagos, Nigeria in 1974 and served five years before retiring to the United States in 1979. Wellman passed away March 5, 2000.
