Photograph album (1 of 2), circa 1915-1918
Contents
Photograph album, circa 1915-1918. The album contains one hundred twenty-nine (129) black and white photographs, mostly uncaptioned, documenting Monks's training in the United States during World War I. A number of pages have come loose in the album. The first half of the album contains primarily images from Monks's Navy training, while the second half contains images of family and friends, views of Florida, and a few photo postcards of ships. The few identified locations include Miami Beach, Seminole (Florida); New Jersey; and Puget Sound (Washington). The first image in the album includes the handwritten caption "W. K. Monks, 1st World War 1915-16, sent to New Jersey 1918."
Images feature:
- Numerous views of aircraft, including biplanes, float planes, and airships. Photos show the aircraft in flight, on the ground and on water, and many wrecks. Aircraft pictured include Curtiss HS-2L, Curtiss N-9, Curtiss R-9, Aeromarine 39-A, Aeromarine 39-B, and Aeromarine 40 (40-F).
- Views of Navy and passenger ships, including one ship with razzle dazzle camouflage and two shots of the flagship New Mexico. Several of these images are photo postcards, on which Monks has written brief captions. Two captions refer to the sinking of the Titanic, but the relation to the image itself is unclear.
- Shots of barracks construction, including views of excavation, materials, men working, bird's eye views of rows of buildings.
- Several group shots of Navy men in sailor uniforms or aviation uniforms, and a few officers.
- Shots of family and friends, including some of men in Navy uniforms (possibly Monks) and a young woman in what appears to be a Red Cross nurse's uniform.
- Scenic views of Florida, including street scenes and store fronts, gardens, waterfront, residences, Elser Pier in Miami Beach, and other landmarks.
