Scope and Contents
- August 30, 1918: Two carbon copies of a list (9 pages) “of the outstanding patents in the airplane art which we are either infringing or are in danger of infringing.” The list was prepared by W. E. Valk and includes sections on Control Mechanisms, Directional Control, Empennage Construction, Flying Boats, Fuel Supply System, Hydroplane Bottoms, Hydroairplanes, Lateral Control, Wing Cell Construction and Arrangement, and Running Gear. Each section contains a description of patents including number and how the patent is being used. The document is marked in pencil ”2365.”
- October 23, 1918: Carbon copy of a memo (2 pages) to J.P.Tarbox listing patents “which either illustrate or suggest that the craft may be used either as a land or a water machine.” The list contains patent number, name of inventor, and “Class” (244-2; 244-14; 244-12; 244-13, and 114-66-5). The document is marked in pencil "2365.”
- October 31, 1918: Three copies of a memo to Tarbox from Charles H. Keel on “Combined Water and Land Aeroplanes.” The memo is a supplement to the report of October 23 and contains patent number, name of inventor, and a description of the patent and how it might impact construction. Keel concludes “there are no basic patents on combined hydro or flying boat and land machine except the Curtiss patent No. 1,269,570.” Attached to one of the reports is the original signed version of the October 23 report annotated in pen and pencil.
- December 23, 1918: A typed report (13 pages) covering patents relating to control, boats, sheddable wings, turnbuckles, and motors. The report includes patent number, name of inventor, date of application and date granted, and a description of what the patent “purports to cover” and how it is being used.
- December 26, 1918: Three copies of a typed report (3 pages) on “Curtiss Patents on Watercraft: Infringed and Probably Infringed by Hydroaerocraft being Manufactured, Used and Sold, December 17, 1917.” The report contains the patent number, name of inventor, a description of claims being infringed, and a summary of manufacturing in progress.
- December 27, 1918: Three copies of a typed report (2 pages) on “Curtiss Patents on Land Aircraft: Infringed by Aircraft now being Manufactured, Used and Sold in the United States.” The report contains the patent number, name of inventor, a description of claims being infringed, and a summary of manufacturing in progress for four patents. The report is attached to the report of December 26 described above.
