Series III. Writings, 1936-circa 2003

 Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

This series consists of documents related to writing projects brought to fruition and published (either as serial publications or small monographs) as well as some book-length subjects. Given Bowers’ prolific writing career resulting in nearly 900 articles and dozens of books, the amount of material in this series (350 files in six cubic feet) is smaller than would be expected. The manuscript drafts are primarily related to magazine articles rather than his book projects, and what is present is far from being a comprehensive collection of his written work. Manuscripts relating to Bowers’ classic Curtiss book by Putnam are among the materials conspicuously not present. A spreadsheet file-level inventory has been created for this series and is available upon request. The series is arranged alphabetically by title or subject. The files predominantly consist of outlines, notes, drafts and revisions, which are nearly all are hand-written in pencil. At some point, his publishers must have demanded that he submit typed manuscripts; he apparently located a student at Highline Community College to transcribe and type for him, and there are some receipts for his payments for this service in the series. These files contain substantial additional correspondence, as well as photographic materials that were apparently either not selected for publication, or which were added after a manuscript was submitted. The archivists have photocopied these letters and placed the copies in the Correspondence Series. The photographic items have also been withdrawn from this series and rehoused in Series I; all separations have been noted. Also included in the files are assorted notes and sometimes copies of the final printed articles.
