Biographical Note: Charles Ashby Shoop
Charles Ashby Shoop was a World War II pilot with the 104th Infantry Division.
Charles Ashby Shoop was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 14, 1916 to Charles Asprel and Myrtle (Ashby) Shoop. He studies at the University of Missouri where he participated in the U.S. Army ROTC program. He began service in the Army on June 19, 1942. He went through basic officer training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and eventually was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division as an artillery forward observer. While training with the division at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, he attended a division ranger school. While on desert maneuvers in Arizona, an order was posted requesting candidates for artillery liaison pilot training; he appplied and was ordered to school in Kansas. Shoop went through basic pilot training at the Army Air Force Liaison Pilot School in from May to August 1943. He then attended the Field Artillery Liaison Pilot Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma from August to September 1943. Shoop qualified as a liaison pilot on September 23, 1943. He was assigned to the 104th Infantry Division, nicknamed "Timberwolves," on September 25, 1943, and was stationed in Europe during World War II.
Post-war, Shoop worked as an engineer and served in the active reserves until November 1964. He was executive officer of the 102nd Aviation Battalion in Kansas City, ranked at O-4, a major. After suffering a heart attack he had to resign his commission.
In November 1942, Shoop married Margaret Etzenhouser (1914-1987). The couple had a son, nameda after him. Charles Ashby Shoop died on January 25, 1966.
