Historical Note

The 94th Aero Squadron was formed at Kelly Field, Texas on August 20, 1917. The group reached Liverpool, England in November 1917 and headed for France, where it was made into a pursuit squadron and saw active combat on the Western Front. On May 5, 1918, the 94th and 95th Aero Squadrons formed the 1st Pursuit Group, with many fighter pilots earning ace status.

In late 1918, the squadron was sent to Koblenz, Germany and remained there until April 1919 when orders were received for the squadron to report to the 1st Air Depot, Colombey-les-Belles Airdrome where the group was relieved from duty with the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). It was demobilized on June 1, 1919.

Abstract

Hamilton "Ham" Coolidge (1895-1918) was one of many young men from wealthy New England families who enlisted during World War I. The collection contains materials related to Captain Coolidge's service a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Service 94th Aero Squadron. Coolidge achieved Ace status, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, and was killed in action.
