Scope Note: Naval Air Station (NAS) Alameda began naval operations on November 1, 1940, though it had been an airfield since 1927, first as Alameda Airport and then as Benton Field. The base was closed in 1997. It is now known as Alameda Point and undergoing urban redevelopment.
