Maxwell Air Force Base (Ala.)

 Subject
Subject Source: Library Of Congress Subject Headings
Scope Note: Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB) was established by the Wright brothers in late February 1910 as the Wright Flying School. The school closed in late May 1910. During and post-World War I, the field was used as repair depot. On November 8, 1922, the War Department redesignated the depot as Maxwell Field. Over the next few years, actions were taken to broaden services from a repair depot to placing flying groups at the field. In 1940, the installation was converted into a pilot-training center and on July 8, 1940, it was redesignated as Southeast Air Corps Training Center. Training at Maxwell continued until December 1945, when it was consolidated into the Central Flying Training Command at Randolph Field, Texas. In 1946, Air University was established at Maxwell. Over the years, other activities were established or relocated to Maxwell AFB and it remains an active military installation.
