William Frederick Barns U.S. Air Force Collection

Abstract

William Frederick "Bill" Barns (1920-1995) joined the United States Air Force in 1942 and flew in the European Theater during World War II. After the war, Barns served in the USAF in several capacities until his retirement in 1966 when he went to work in the private sector, including for Garrett Corporation. The collection contains a broad array of textual materials as well as photographs and digital images related to his military and professional careers.

The Elrey B. Jeppesen Papers documents the career and personal life of aviator and aerial navigation pioneer Elrey B. Jeppesen. This collection is comprised of textual, visual, and audiovisual materials created and collected by EBJ and his wife and business partner, Nadine Audrey (Liscomb) Jeppesen. The documents date from 1843-1996, with the bulk of the material dating from 1940-1979.

Dean Mesnard World War II Navigator Chart

Contents of the Collection The collection contains a single navigational chart printed October 1944 and used by the United States Army Air Forces, 505th Bombardment Group during World War II. The top of the chart is printed as "AAF Special Plotting Chart, Chart No. S-501, Restricted." There are plotting notations done in pencil with various markings, presumably to aid the navigator. Abstract

Dorothy (Hester) Stenzel (1910-1991) was born in Ardenwald, Oregon and learned to fly in the late 1920s. Stenzel then gained fame for stunt flying and broke several records through the mid-1930s. The collection contains seven scrapbooks and assorted textual materials and photographs that document Stenzel's career as one of the first female stunt pilots.
