Content Description

The Irving Louis Shechter Philatelic Collection consists of 53 philatelic airmail covers. The items span 1927-1954 and are arranged in chronological order. Of note are covers related to Lindbergh and his promotional airmail flights after his record-setting transatlantic flight, as well as the first airmail express flight to the Panama Canal that he piloted in 1930. Also present are cacheted covers for the first night flight on C.A.M. route 26 from Pocatello, Idaho to Salt Lake City, Utah, 1930; the first shore-to-ship airmail service from Glendale, California to the SS City of Los Angeles, 1931; the first regular 16-hour airmail service from Los Angeles, California to New York, 1934; assorted inter-island flights in Hawaii in the 1930s; various trans-Pacific flights to locations including Guam and Hong Kong; the first airmail flight via rotary-wing aircraft (autogiro) in 1939; the first airmail flight via helicopter in Long Beach, California, 1946; among others.
