Contract between Wright Company and Orville Wright, 1915 October
Scope and Contents
A contract between the Wright Company and Orville Wright (the “inventor of the so-called Wright Aeroplane”). The Wright Company agrees to engage Orville Wright as a consulting engineer for $25,000 annually because he is “a pioneer in the art of flying, and has peculiar ability in connection therewith, and is an engineer of standing and repute.” Wright agrees to assign to the Company “such inventions as he may make in heavier-than-air flying machines and appurtenances thereto.” The Wright Company agrees that if it lists its stock on any stock exchange it will not do so until it changes its name “so that the name of Wright shall not appear therein.” The pen-and-ink changes in the draft agreement in box Two, Folder 11 that delete mention of Orville Wright having his “own laboratory” have been made in the signed version, but a proposed change canceling all of Wright’s “outstanding agreements” was not made. The contract is three pages and was signed by T. Frank Manville (as President) and Orville Wright in October 1915 (no specific day is given). The contract is embossed with 1909 Wright Company seal.
