Drawing -- framed portrait of Collyer. Graphite on paper by Levon Fairchild West, circa 1920s
Contents of the Collection
The Captain Charles B. D. Collyer Collection is a small collection of portraits and correspondence related to Captain Charles B. D. Collyer. The bulk of the collection is comprised of correspondence between Collyer's former fiancée Eleanor Waddell, A. Lee Moore, Arizona Senator Carl Hayden, and Secretary of War Harry L. Stimson. The correspondence focuses on Waddell's attempt to have an air field in Arizona named in honor of Collyer. Note that the initial letter from Waddell to Senator Hayden is dated February 24, 1924. However, Collyer did not die until November 3, 1928 so it is likely the date on the letter is incorrect, especially as the bulk of the letters are from 1941.
Other materials include two (2) copies of a black-and-white photographic portrait of Collyer. Both are signed on the front with a fading inscription, "Happy Landings, To Eleanor from 'Colly' 1928." One of the copies is mounted on mat board. There is also a framed drawn portrait of Collyer, signed by Levon Fairchild West, circa 1920s.
